Over the past 30 years, homeowners nationwide have increasingly turned to spray foam to keep their homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Made from either low-density elastomers or polymers, spray foam insulation effectively reduces thermal transfer, enhancing comfort and helping lower utility bills.

At Winner Insulation, our insulation specialists can install spray foam solutions to lower your utility bills, reduce noise pollution, and protect your home from pest infiltrations. We offer a broad selection of top-quality insulation options and will help you find the ideal solution for your needs and comfort.

What Is the Difference Between Open-Cell & Closed-Cell Insulation?

Open-cell spray foam insulation features open cells with a density of 1.75 lbs. per square foot. Highly expandable, open-cell spray foam can expand to 100 times its liquid state. When it dries, it forms soft, flexible insulation with an R-value of R3.5 to R3.8 per inch. Once installed, it effectively fills gaps and drafts while reducing heat transfer through roofs, walls, flooring, and throughout the structure.

Conversely, closed-cell spray foam insulation features cells that are completely closed and pressed together into a structure with a density approaching 5 pounds per square foot. While heavier than lightweight open-cell insulation, closed-cell insulation has an R-value approaching R7 per square inch. And while closed-cell insulation won’t absorb water like open-cell insulation can, it is less effective at reducing noise pollution.

When installed, closed-cell insulation expands roughly 40 times from its liquid state. Once dry, closed-cell polyurethane foam also helps establish a consistent temperature throughout the structure by protecting against heat gain/heat loss. This makes it perfect for reducing energy usage and general wear and tear on HVAC systems.

What Is Closed-Cell Spray Foam Used For?

Closed cell spray foam insulation

Closed-cell spray foam insulation offers a higher R-value, strong protection against moisture infiltration, and can add structural support to the building. Once installed, closed-cell spray foam provides an effective barrier against bulk water and can significantly reduce moldy, musty odors within the space. This makes the insulation ideal for use in basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls.

What Is Open-Cell Spray Foam Used For?

Closed cell spray foam insulation
Open-cell spray foam insulation is optimized for above-grade installation, specifically within attics, between floors, and within interior walls. Because it is not an effective moisture vapor barrier, it should not be installed where it can be easily exposed to water as the water will pass through it and into the underlying drywall or flooring.
Cost-effective and with a higher expansion rate, open-cell spray foam effectively fills gaps and provides superior insulation against noise pollution. It also covers a considerable amount of space with less material than closed-cell insulation requires.
